Breixo Martínez
Butter Mix 103
1/21/2021

Welcome Breixo Martínez to the Butter Mix family for BSRMIX #103! We caught up with Breixo to chat about the state of the industry in his home city of Barcelona, the future of his label Canela En Surco and more at www.butteressions.com.

How and where did you record this mix?

I recorded the mix in my apartment in the Raval neighborhood here in Barcelona. It’s a tiny flat I’ve been living in for 8 years now. Since it is close to most of the record stores in the city, friends often come over after the stores close and listen to the records we bought. I recorded the mix with a turntable, 2 CDJs, and an Omnitronic mixer.

Can you tell us what the Barcelona scene has been like this year?

There was no scene this year since everything has been closed since March. Fortunately, our friends have been releasing new music and it’s fair to say it was an incredible year for the quality of their productions. Karmasound, Proceed, IVAN, Ylia, Ubaldo from Urpa i Musell label, Noaipre, and John Talabot as Koraal are some of the best examples of what I'm talking about. Definitely check out all of these people's stuff.

What future plans do you have for your label Canela En Surco?

Two years after our first release this month we are releasing a compilation of Alex Martin, one of the pioneers of electronic music here in Spain. The record attempts to capture the wide variety of styles he made under many different aliases and projects during his early days of production (1994-1998), from ambient & downtempo to NYC and Detroit-influenced House music, as well as minimal techno & early tech-house. It's a double vinyl compilation distributed by our friends from Subwax Bcn.

After this, we have plans to release a contemporary record by two of our favorite musicians at the moment (Pedro & Damian Botigué aka Karmasound).

Next spring I'll be starting another label called Escola Records with my friend Pau Roca which will be more focused on soulful house and broken beat. We are very excited for the first release, to be announced soon.
